Lawndale Art Center is one of the only institutions in Houston dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on work by regional artists. Located in the Houston Museum District the organization utilizes its accessible location to present exhibitions, performances, lectures, film screenings and events, and offers an annual residency program to further the creative exchange of ideas among Houston's diverse communities.

John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, started his project now known as the Beer Can House in 1968 when he began inlaying thousands of marbles, rocks, and metal pieces into concrete and redwood to form unique landscaping features. When the entire front and back yard were completely covered because he "got sick of mowing the grass", he turned to the house itself and began adding aluminum siding .

Internationally acclaimed artist Dan Dunn is a speed painter and a studio artist. Dunn is a native Houstonian whose art career has spanned caricature, advertising, toy design, and now painting for live audiences for their entertainment. He has won numerous national awards and been commissioned to draw caricatures and portraits for the likes of President George H. W. Bush, Sting, Simon Cowell, and Jimmy Buffett, just to name a few. His portrait of the Columbia astronauts hangs at NASA.
