2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™
For many residents in the nation’s fourth largest city, spring is the most anticipated season of the year — it’s Rodeo time! Whether you’re a long-time Houston resident, a newcomer or a visitor, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ is an event you won’t want to miss.
Agriculture and education
Unlike any event of its kind, the Show draws more than 2.4 million visitors to NRG Park in celebration of agriculture, education, entertainment and Western heritage. What started out as an opportunity to promote the cattle industry along the Texas Gulf Coast, back in 1932, has developed into the world’s largest livestock show and rodeo, offering visitors larger-than-life entertainment, attractions, educational experiences, and stiff competition.
Each year the Houston Livestock Show™ draws more than 30,000 entries, representative of hundreds of species of livestock, to the iconic green wood shavings that cover the livestock show rings. Exhibitors from nearly all 254 counties in Texas come to compete in the junior market competitions, and livestock raisers from across the county compete in open and youth shows. Top-placing junior market exhibitors advance to one of four auctions in hopes of snagging a top bid for their livestock and helping secure their future educations or other endeavors. In 2016, junior market auction proceeds also added more than $12 million to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund.
World’s most innovative rodeo
The competition is intense all around NRG Park during the 20-day run of the Show. Just steps away from the livestock competitions in NRG Center, more than 350 of rodeo’s top athletes rope and ride in two competitions at RodeoHouston® for a total purse of $2.17 million. Each night in NRG Stadium, the toughest cowboys and cowgirls battle it out during the Super Series, a 19-day tournament-style competition, and the Super Shootout®: North America’s Champions, presented by Crown Royal, a one-day rodeo featuring champions from the top rodeos in North America.
At the conclusion of the rodeo events each night, NRG Stadium is transformed into a world-class concert venue ready to host performances by leading music superstars. Since 1942 when singing cowboy Gene Autry first took the stage, RodeoHouston has hosted some of the biggest names in music from Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton to Maroon 5 and Willie Nelson. Nelson will return to RodeoHouston for his 10th performance on March 18, 2017.
Entertainment around every corner
Visitors who are looking for a place to dance should stop by one of the Show’s three additional live music venues. Listen to performances by local and Texas Country artists while two-stepping across the dance floor at the Champion Wine Garden, Stars Over Texas Stage and The Hideout. On the Show grounds, visitors also will discover a variety of family-friendly exhibits and attractions, thrilling carnival rides and games, and fair food goodies.
Texas’ greatest tradition would not be the success it is today without the support of 33,000 dedicated volunteers. These individuals give their time in support of the Show’s dedication to benefiting youth, supporting education, and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. With their help, the Show has committed more than $430 million to the youth of Texas, since 1932.
The Show welcomes visitors to NRG Park March 7–26, 2017. Visit rodeohouston.com or download the RODEOHOUSTON mobile app to learn more.
